Trip to Worcester

Filed under: General — Dennis Coles @ 16:59

The trip to Worcester on June 17 was thoroughly enjoyed by the 36 members and friends who went. The weather was glorious. In the Commandery there was a live demonstration of the uniforms of the British army of the 18th Century with explanations of how and why it had evolved. Many of us enjoyed a visit to the 900 year old Cathedral where a special commemorative service was taking place. Others felt it was beholden to them to visit the oldest public house in the city the Eagle Vaults in Friar Street. And of course no visit would have been complete without a visit to the Royal Worcester shops. Next year it has been suggested that we might visit Portsmouth and hire a more luxurious coach. Members views would be welcomed on this.

Saturday July 8 saw the culmination of the Brixworth Millennium Week with a Carnival themed on the Past ,the Present and the Future, starting at Ferro Fields and winding its way down the Harboro Road and then up to St Davids playing fields where prizes were presented by the Chairman of the Brixworth Parish Council, Mrs Susan Verrallo. The Brixworth History Float was one of ten that took part and although it didn’t win a prize it was still a credit to Ron Edwards and his team who put it together. I particularly liked the imposing figure of the 19th C. Father Watkins. The Stocks made by Phil Alcock were widely admired and our eagle eyed Treasurer Deni Willis immediately declared that they would be available for hiring for future events such as School fetes. Our thanks to Mawsley Machinery for lending their lorry for the float and to Keith Pearce who gave up his afternoon to drive it.

In an action packed month the evening of July 20 saw a treasure hunt written by our Secretary with some 20 odd participants who had a lovely summer’s evening to amble round the village clueless before returning to the Heritage Centre for a well earned cup of tea made by our afore mentioned Treasurer and her little assistants and very reasonably priced (!) Subsequently we adjourned to the George for a debriefing.
