Summer outing to Bury st Edmunds

Filed under: General — Dennis Coles @ 22:59

Over 30 members and friends joined us for the trip to Bury StEdmunds stopping for a couple of Hours at Ely on route.
Our Treasurer kindly refunded £5 to each of us in the form of a newly minted £5 coin celebrating 100 years of the Entente Cordial, one of my favourite drinks.
I hope to include some pictures taken on the day in this site shortly.
several people commented that they would have liked to spend more time in Ely which is certainly a lovely city with an attractive waterfront and a thriving market.
At Bury St Edmunds the hotel overlooking the square had a cellar restaurant which provided an excellent lunch and the Abbey grounds looked splendid.

Some members in the interests of research made the short walk to the Greene King Brewery. This was generally thought to be overpriced for a small museum and the gift items carried prices such as £17 for a Speckled Hen golf umbrella. no one in our party wanted to pay those sort of prices for what is basically promotional items.

We also visited what is claimed to be the smallest pub in the country but it was already packed with three or four people. Much bigger was the bookshop half way up the hill which lived up to its claim to be much bigger inside than it looked from the outside.:E
